100 Years Ago

1910 - The Kahului Furniture Department of the Kahului Store announces that they have the best made furniture that can be secured on the coast. Bureaus and chiffoniers, full oak, $13 and up. We also are selling the celebrated American refrigerators at the unheard of price of $7 and up.

75 Years Ago

1935 - The Wailuku Chinese Ladies Aid Society is planning a food sale at the Alexander House settlement on Saturday. Last week, as an example of the type of work this organization is doing, the society furnished clothing for the burial of an indigent.

50 Years Ago

1960 - Eighth-grader Makaala Stone defeated last year's champion, Miles Yamada, in the finals by an 8-5 margin to capture the 1960 title in the second annual Makawao School marbles tournament. The tournament attracted 24 entries.

25 Years Ago

1985 - A PBS special broadcast tonight commemorates the 40th anniversary of the end of World War II and documents the "life stories of six American servicemen, who never returned home from the war." Maui-born Taro Tonai, a private in Company C of the 100th Infantry Battalion, is one of the men being honored.

10 Years Ago

2000 - Since 1972, Lahaina's Nagasako Variety has catered to every taste. But at the end of this month, it will close up. Customers will miss the neighborhood landmark that once was a retail center for the town.
